Who plays? All 3rd -6th graders who want to participate will be allowed to play as long as they can come to the practices and games, have shin guards and cleats (kids actually could play in any shoes but cleats are recommended), and they have a registration form signed by the parent.
Tryouts? The coaches who volunteer will evaluate the kids and split them up according to skill level with the stronger players on the gold team and the players who aren't as skilled on the silver team. In the past we have had enough kids interested in playing to field a gold and a silver team (or two) in each division. 3rd/4th will play 9v9 and 5th/6th will play 11v11. The first few practices will probably be held as a group (all 3rd/ 4th girls together etc..) so that the coaches can see the kids play at more than one practice before splitting up the teams.
Cost? Registration is $10 per child and includes the official Pilot Cup T-Shirt. In order to field teams we need to have adults to volunteer to coach the practices and games. In the past, some teams have not been able to find a parent to run the practices and so they have hired someone and split the cost amongst the players.
When? Practices will be in May, usually after school 2x per week. The time of practices is dependent on the volunteer coaches' availability so we don't know for sure when practices will be held. In the past the practices have been held at Lincoln. The tournament will run from May 29th - June 3rd at Costa Mesa High School and the adjoining Farm complex in Costa Mesa. Weekday games will start as early as 3:30pm or as late as 7:30 pm. Weekend games are also played. Typically, each team plays at least 3 games. If they win their pool then they move on to single elimination.
Every school does things a little bit differently regarding choosing teams, practices, etc... The above information is what we plan to do at Lincoln.
